Great news yesterday from the commissioning editor at Penguin — she loved the revisions and the manuscript has now been accepted for publication. Now it’s off to copy-editing.
I had to dance when I saw her final editorial comments:
“Thank you so much for all of your hard work revising The Beggar’s Opera. This draft is fantastic. It is a beautifully written, well paced, dramatic police procedural and you should be very, very proud of it. I think it’s remarkable that you’ve created a crime novel that is both plausible and operatic. It’s brilliant. Congratulations.”
Things are now moving quickly: today we had some back and forth over the jacket ‘blurb’ for advance review copies until we came up with copy we liked. I also prepared my acknowledgements and figured out what quotes to put in the epigraph.
I’m sure that Penguin, which holds the world English rights, will be getting ready to sell the book to UK and US publishers as well, so it’s pretty heady stuff. I’ll keep y’all posted. Exciting!!!!
